A poem by Nasrullah Anwar, dedicated to the victims and survivors of the Pakistan Earthquake and the South Asian Tsunami. The author wrote this poem in request by his sister, who was a teacher at a Manchester girls high school, Afifa High, to raise funds for the survivors of the earthquake in the Kashmir area of Pakistan.
It’s hard to imagine or understand,
The scale of loss a disaster causes.
Statistics of those wounded and the dead,
Cannot import a true sense of heartbreak,
Of losing kith and kin and all your friends.
Nevertheless, even in vain we try,
To comprehend the bereavement, to share,
Sympathy for those lost and those who’ve lost,
And prayers with those who still bear some hope.
For in the end, past giving all we can,
All we have left are the prayers we send.
